Journalist and Musician

Maurice Chammah is currently a staff writer at The Marshall Project.

In Texas, his writing on law, crime, religion, and other subjects has appeared in The New York Times, Slate, Texas MonthlyThe Texas ObserverGuernica Magazine, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.

As a 2011-2012 Fulbright fellow in Cairo, Egypt, he reported for Rolling Stone Middle East,  The Revealer, and the Austin American-Statesman. View his latest writing about Egypt at Adrift on the Nile.

He has played violin in the band Mother Falcon and is an Assistant Editor at American Short Fiction. He’s on Twitter and LinkedIn. He lives in Austin, Texas.
